Marsyas Baroque
MARSYAS BAROQUE is a dynamic all-female quartet, known for its open-minded approach to Early Music and refined programme concepts.
Paula Pinn (recorders, historical bassoons), María Carrasco Gil (baroque violin), Konstanze Waidosch (baroque cello, viola da gamba), and Sara Johnson Huidobro (harpsichord, organ) perform chamber music of the 17th and 18th centuries on period instruments—often in their own arrangements—and collaborate with composers on newly commissioned works that expand their repertoire in a contemporary context. Project-based collaborations with guest musicians further broaden the ensemble’s artistic scope.
Marsyas Baroque performs across Europe, including festivals such as the Thuringia Bach Weeks, Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, Bachfest Leipzig, ZAMUS Early Music Festival, Bachwoche Ansbach, Musica Bayreuth, Winter in Schwetzingen, Trigonale Festival, CNDM Universo Barroco & Primavera Barroca, and Clásicos en Verano.
Supported by grants from the German Orchestra Foundation, the ensemble brought the intercultural project Diálogos to life, blending Spanish and German music and poetry. In 2025, Marsyas Baroque will launch a new interdisciplinary project centered on Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, combining newly commissioned compositions with light design and theatre. Other highlights include the immersive concert Bach in the Dark, a children’s concert Don Quichotte, and a newly created drama, La vida es sueño, featuring flamenco dancer Martí Corbera.
The legend of the flute-playing satyr Marsyas tells a story about passion, courage, talent, cruel revenge and a musical duel—an inspiration for the German-Spanish ensemble, which itself came together in occasion of a competition. Without ever having played music together before, they decided without further ado in 2019 to participate as Marsyas Baroque in the German Music Competition (Deutscher Musikwettbewerb) of that year. They were successful and received a scholarship from the German Music Council (Deutscher Musikrat), combined with admission to the BAKJK (Bundesauswahl Konzerte Junger Künstler), and the special prize of the Ensemble Academy Freiburg. A short time later, the ensemble also won 1st prize at the renowned Biagio Marini Competition in Neuburg an der Donau.
Marsyas Baroque’s 2024 debut album, featuring suites by François Dieupart and J.S. Bach, received widespread acclaim and was highlighted by broadcasters including Deutschlandfunk, MDR, rbb, BR, SWR, Bremen Zwei, RTVE (Spain), and opus 100.7 (Luxembourg).
